The Holy Quran : Chapter 90 : Al-Balad (The City)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ

90:1. Nay I do swear by this City;-

وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ

90:2. And you are an inhabitant of this City;-

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ

90:3. And the begetter and that he begot;-

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ

90:4. Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.

 أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ

90:5. Thinks he, that none has power over him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا

90:6. He may say (boastfully): "Wealth have I squandered in abundance!"

أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ

90:7. Thinks he that none beholds him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ

90:8. Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?-

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

90:9. And a tongue, and a pair of lips?-

 وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ

90:10. And shown him the two highways?

فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ

90:11. But he has made no haste on the path that is steep.

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ

90:12. And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

90:13. (It is:) freeing the bondman;

أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ

90:14. Or the giving of food in a day of privation

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ

90:15. To the orphan with claims of relationship,

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ

90:16. Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ

90:17. Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.

أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ

90:18. Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ

90:19. But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ

90:20. On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).
